Agronomy Labs

Entities:

Status: Concept Design/Funding

Goals:

1. Reconstruct the Plant Pathology Lab: Replacement of damaged equipment is needed to revitalize the lab for education, research, and extension services.

2. Develop a Seed Testing Lab: It would be the first in the nation and will invigorate the agriculture sector. Functions include: sampling and testing for purity, germination, water content, sanitary status. Besides infrastructural development, train the trainer will be the second component enabling the staff to conduct research, serve as extension for the government, and integrate with the curriculum.  

Davis will have the unique opportunity to incorporate these labs into its International Agriculture Development educational programs.

Competitive University Debate

Status: Implementation

This project will establish for the first time an inter-university debate competition within UEH and its peer institutions, Universite Notre Dame d’Haiti and Universite Quisqueya. University students will engage in policy-focused debate, learn communication skills, and focus on issues around core sectors of Haitian redevelopment. This project will also generate project ideas for sustainable development endeavors.

Emergency Medical Care Development Program

A program designed and implemented by the International Medical Corps.

Status: Implementation

Goals: This project aims to improve the quality of emergency care at the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH) by providing training through an Emergency Medicine Center of Excellence (EMCD). The program’s implementation will be based on a collaborative approach between all stakeholders, including MSPP, NGOs and HUEH management and staff. The project will achieve these goals through five components focused on supporting HUEH:
1. Component 1: Develop an Emergency Medical Care Working Group (EMCWG) for HUEH and Haiti nationally
2. Component 2: Establish an Emergency Medicine Center of Excellence (EMCE)
3. Component 3: Improve emergency response to disaster events
4. Component 4: Strengthen Health Information Systems (HIS) for injury surveillance and emergency medicine
5. Component 5: Provide training courses on international emergency medical standards (train 100 nurses and 50 physicians)

Essential Medicines Availability and Pricing

Status: Implementation

Goals: The problem of inaccessible medication and the harm and burden incurred by high volume sale of counterfeit drugs must be addressed. This project will conduct qualitative research into pricing and availability of essential medications to impact OPS policy on stockpiling and the Ministry of Public Health’s efforts to implement an essential medications list.

Global Health-Hospital Medicine Fellowship

  • Partners in Health Mirebalais Hospital

Status: Implementation

Goals: Starting with a pilot with intention of maintaining year after year, a young physician from UCSF will complete 7 months of fieldwork at a Partners in Health (PIH) site in Haiti.  This will allow PIH to strengthen clinical care, establish hospital medicine as a specialty area, and in the future, allow for educational opportunities for Haitian and American residents and medical students.
