The UC Haiti Initiative @ UC Riverside is driven by students, faculty, researchers and affiliates who are interested in applying their academic resources to the search for real solutions to the poverty created and perpetuated by the earthquake that devastated Haiti in January of 2010.
This chapter is a call to action for those affected by the earthquake, founded at the UC Riverside campus in April of that year. UC Haiti Initiative @ UC Riverside is working to bring speakers to the Riverside campus and remind people of the ongoing crisis in Haiti, hoping to increase local awareness of the UCHI organization while gathering faculty and student support. Similar to the courses being taught at UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside held a course in Spring 2011 focusing on problems facing Haiti's redevelopment.
Our goal is to promote a shared vision of the future growth and development possible for the Haitian community, in which we develop new ways of working together from within the structure of the University at a global, national and local level. This is a vision that has poor communities and people at its center, and a wish to focus action on the causes and consequences of the post-earthquake conditions that continue to shake and impoverish these communities. We invite you to learn how you can get involved in our cause, promoting awareness and information about Haiti's post-earthquake realities.
